Captain Michael Spencer

On October 20, 2015, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Engine Company 7 responded to a fire at 5144 West Grace Street.  While in route to this early morning fire, the alarm was upgraded to a still and box fire, due to new reports of a trapped victim.  Engine Company 7, along with Truck Company 58 arrived to find a 2 ½ story building with heavy fire and smoke conditions showing on the first floor.  Captain Spencer of Engine Company 7 was informed by a bystander that her husband was still inside and was unable to get him out of bed.  Taking the command of the situation, Captain Spencer ordered his company to lead out a hose line to fight the fire, but knowing time was of the essence, and with conditions worsening, Captain Spencer entered the burning structure to begin searching for the victim.  Under extreme heat and fire conditions, with zero visibility, he located the unconscious victim.  Captain Spencer brought the victim to the front door to an awaiting firefighter and ambulance company.  The victim had no vital signs and had suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns.  Resuscitation efforts began and the victim was transported to a local hospital and burn unit.  After the rescue, Captain Spencer continued search efforts and aided his fire company in extinguishing the blaze.

Captain Spencer performed his duties in the highest tradition of The Chicago Fire Department, acting selflessly and heroically and going above and beyond the call of duty. He put himself in danger, worked swiftly and professionally and deserves to be recognized for his extraordinary display of professionalism and lifesaving intervention.
